{"id":391,"date":"2015-02-05T13:54:10","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T13:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peterkreutzer.com\/blog\/?p=391"},"modified":"2015-02-05T13:54:10","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T13:54:10","slug":"link-joe-posnanski-on-charlie-sifford-who-died-yesterday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterkreutzer.com\/blog\/?p=391","title":{"rendered":"LINK: Joe Posnanski on Charlie Sifford, Who Died Yesterday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peterkreutzer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screenshot-2015-02-05-08.38.36.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peterkreutzer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screenshot-2015-02-05-08.38.36.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2015-02-05 08.38.36\" width=\"122\" height=\"152\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-392\" \/><\/a>Charlie Sifford was a black golfer at a time when the PGA, the Professional Golfer&#8217;s Association of America, had in its by-laws a clause that specified that only white golfers could play in PGA tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>This was a long time ago, but it was within my lifetime, and long after the ban was lifted Sifford could not get invited to the Masters tournament, because it was played at a golf club that did not allow people of color to play.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/joeposnanski.com\/joeblogs\/rip-charlie-sifford\/\">Joe Posnanski story<\/a> is about trying to write a column about Sifford and Augusta National in the early 90s(!!!), and having the story spiked (possibly? probably?) because it was critical of the club. Heck, Augusta National didn&#8217;t allow a black man to play in the Masters until 1990, under what at that point was intense pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Sifford&#8217;s autobiography is called, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/094516744X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=094516744X&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=booknoisenet-20&#038;linkId=6CJ66UWZDISQPPEU\">Just Let Me Play: The Story of Charlie Sifford, the First Black Pga Golfer<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=booknoisenet-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=094516744X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>, and seems to cost more than $2,000 today.
